The story starts with the twelve-year-old Lyra following the northern lights in an attempt to rescue his friend who was kidnapped by the Gobblers. During her journey, she encounters witches and armed polar bears who become her partners during her quest.
Lyra uses a compass-looking tool called an alethiometer that can help a skilled user find what he truly desires. In the first book, Lyra finds his new partner, Will, who is from the normal world. In His Dark Material, the writer has divided the adventures of the characters between two worlds, and they go back and forth between two different worlds. According to Pullman, these words exist and are parallel but are not exactly the same.
In the later series, Lyra and Will encounter different challenges as their worlds are completely different and have different types of environmental challenges. One of the most imperative aspects of this series of novels is showing the amazing transformation of characters from childhood to adulthood as Lyra and Will grow together and face life challenges.
