Three years before the actual start of the novel, Kelsier realizes that he is a Mistborn during his escape from the Pits of Hathsin, a prison camp of the Lord Ruler. He decided to return to the capital city of Final Empire, Luthadel, to form his own team of robbers.
The reason behind forming his own army was to rob the treasury of the Final Empire and collapse its economy. Even though he formed the best crew to execute his plan, the crew still finds his plan a long shot and lacks the confidence to execute it.
Until another half-Skaa, just like Kel, a ragged girl named Vin, joins the crew. Vin has also lived a very harsh life and finds it very difficult to trust anybody she meets. However, in order to successfully execute the mission, Vin has to trust Kel’s plan, as only Kel can help her master the powers that she never knew she had.
