Everything You Want Is On The Other Side Of Fear
What does the saying Everything You Want Is On The Other Side Of Fear mean?
We all have dreams but we also have fears. Dreams excite us, they make our hearts sing, they give us something to aspire to but then the fear comes in and kills the mood. Damn! If only we could get past the fear then we could get hold of our dreams. This is what George Addair was saying. Fear is the one thing that stands in the way of our growth and expansion. Fear stops our dreams in their tracks.
Fear manifests itself in sneaky ways. Quite often it comes disguised as a protective friend. We fall for the camouflage and then begin to justify our fears. We will fight tooth and nail to prove the legitimacy of our fears. Does this ring a bell? Ever been in a situation where deep down you wanted to go for something but then you talked yourself out of it. Your mind became a like an election campaign arena of two opposing political parties. The Fear Party vs The Dream Party. In your head, you stood confidently fighting the case for your fears, you got all the evidence out, probably including some facts and numbers and you presented a very strong case for your fears. Right there, you thwarted your dream. The Dream Party lost and retreated. Your dream was destroyed and just like a losing party backed off.
Such is the power of fear. It disguises itself and it becomes a part of us that we protect. If a friend or a work colleague tries to talk us out of our fears, we rise to the challenge and again and again defend our fears. Without realising it we sabotage our own dreams. George Addair’s words, Everything You Want Is On The Other Side Of Fear must sink in deep in within us. We must realise that in defending fear, in being the advocate for our own fears there is no progress. As someone said, it’s either you are making progress or regressing. You cannot stay in the same place because life is constantly on the move.
Therefore with fear gripping us, we can only regress. We lose our ‘mojo’ for life and we stick with the mundane. The fear holds us back in the so called comfort zone. But still at the back of our mind, that dream will be silently wanting to come out. Our mind becomes this battlefield of thoughts and this eats us up.This is because our dreams although thwarted by our fears, they are persistent. The dream is eager to express itself in us. We innately know that even though the fear keeps winning the election campaign, we are really holding ourselves back.
The voice of your dream will not stop. The comfort zone is not so comfortable. Deep down you know you want progress, you want excitement, you want adventure and to explore, but remember everything you want is on the other side of fear. Fear must be overcome. Fear must be relinquished and the barriers of the comfort zone must be demolished. You need to cross over the barriers because everything you want is on the other side of fear.
There is no other way to get rid of our fears but to look them in the eye and say game on! As Susan Jeffers says,
Feel the fear and do it anyway.
We must get over the scary tactics of the ‘what ifs’. The ‘what ifs’ are just fears of what might happen and we often exaggerate them in a bid to protect ourselves. But as Ryan Blair says in his book, Nothing To Lose Everything To Gain,
You’ll survive, no matter how bad it is—it isn’t as bad it could be.
We all owe it to ourselves to have the determination to face our fears. When we do not face our fears, and suppress our desires, we can feel the discord in ourselves. We can feel that that we are being called to something more but we are not going. But just like a bird chick takes it’s first flight, although scary at first, there is so much freedom and power in doing so. The places you could go, the new friendships you could carve, the different variety of foods you could eat and so on. Everything you want is on the other side of fear for sure.
Once you have broken down the barriers of fear and actually proved to yourself that everything you want is on the other side of fear, your confidence soars. You will now see any fears as challenges that you can overcome. You will now know that you can achieve your dreams.
In the words of one of my favorite speakers, Abraham Hicks,
The better it gets, the better it gets.
You will become the person your peers don’t recognise. Therefore it is worthwhile trumping our fears. Even if we dont quite get as far as we envinsioned but we have boost our confidence, we have proved that we can overcome fear and in so doing we come out more empowered. David Goggins is an example of someone who looked fear in the face and trumped all over it. As he triumphed in one challenge, he became invincible and continued to succeed challenge after challenge.
This is my interpretation of George Addair’s ‘Everything you want is on the other side of fear’. On the other side of fear we find adventure, triumph, fulfillment, empowerment, joy and a sense of satisfaction that even if we don’t fully realise the dream but at least we tried.
