The book narrates the story of Ivy Westfall after a brutal nuclear attack that nearly destroyed everything and divided the country between two powerful families. Both families want to maintain their power by ruling the nation, resulting in dividing the nation between two families, and people have to choose between the Westfall and Lattimers as their leaders.
This conflict resulted in the Latimer family winning against Westfall, and they gained control and power in the country. However, in order to maintain the peace between the two families and the country, the daughter of the losing team, Ivy Westfall, has to marry Bishop Lattimer, the son of the Lattimer family, in a yearly ritual.
However, Ivy has some other plans, including getting the lost power back to her family. That can only be done by killing her soon-to-be husband. However, the only problem is Ivy is failing to understand Bishop, who she thought would be a cold, ruthless, and arrogant person. Nevertheless, Bishop, to her surprise, turns out to be the only person who genuinely understands her.
